Stark County - Ohio

Stark County is located in northeastern Ohio, approximately 20 from Akron and 53 miles south of Cleveland.   Stark County is made up of seventeen townships containing five incorporated cities and fourteen villages.  The city of Canton, as the county seat, is considered the hub, but each area offers a unique lifestyle.

   Stark County Recreation and Lifestyle

The arts are alive and well in Stark County.  The Canton Cultural Center for the Arts houses the offices, theaters and studios of the Canton Ballet the premiere training ground in Northeastern Ohio for classical ballet, Voices in Canton, the Civic Opera,  Canton Museum of Art with it’s stunning permanent collection of American Watercolors of the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries and Contemporary Ceramics, the Canton Symphony Orchestra one of the nation’s finest “small-budget orchestral programs and the Players Guild, Local theater at it’s finest.  

Museums, art galleries abound.  The best known and most diversified is the McKinley Museum of History, Science and Industry.  The Museum contains an outstanding collection of local history as well as memorabilia of President William McKinley, the 25th President and Canton’s favorite son. The Museum is adjacent to the pink granite McKinley Memorial, the largest and most ornate monument to a president outside of Washington D.C.   The newest attraction is the National First Ladies' Library, an archive for information about our Nation’s First Ladies.  The Library is located in Canton in the magnificently restored girlhood home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley.

Stark County has a long and rich athletic tradition.  Canton is the home of the Professional Football Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Festival typically draws over 500,000 visitors each year in late July and early August.  The area is also nationally recognized for the achievements of its high school athletic programs.  Stark County is the host of the Ohio State High School Athletic Association’s football and swimming and diving championships.  With 21 public golf courses, Stark County is building a reputation as Ohio’s Golf Capital.   There are now more than 100 public parks in Stark County many with trails for biking and hiking.  The C. T. Branin Natatorium, with its 50-meter olympic-size pool, is for public use. 

   Stark County Education

Education is a priority in Stark County.  Public schools offer highly diversified curricula that go far beyond traditional education.  Stark County is home to six colleges and universities as well as many private, parochial and Christian schools. 

   Stark County Health Care

Health care is provided by four major hospitals as well as several immediate care facilities located throughout the county.  Stark County is approximately one hour from the renowned Cleveland Clinic.  Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Akron is within a 30 minute drive. 

   Stark County Transportation

The Akron-Canton Regional Airport, on I-77, is a convenient 9-1/2 miles north of Canton’s Central Plaza.  The Airport, one of the fastest growing airports in the United States, offers a convenient, efficient and economical alternative to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
